Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of bedrails use among nurses working in long-term care hospitals.

Methods: Colaizzi's phenomenological method was applied. Participants were 10 nurses working in long-term care hospitals. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews. Data collection was done until data saturation was reached. Data were collected from December 2018 to January 2019.

Results: Results of this study had four categories and 13 clusters of themes. These four categories were: ¡®habitual use of bedrails¡¯, ¡®evidence of nurse-centered use of bedrails¡¯, ¡®recognition of problems caused in the use of bedrails¡¯, and ¡®finding an appropriate way to use bedrails¡¯.

Conclusion: In Korea, bedrails are commonly used in clinical practice because of their strong perception as an aid in patient safety and fall prevention. However, the use of bedrails not only has benefits, but also can cause serious risks. Thus, it is necessary to use them according to certain standards.
Findings of this study will guide suitable use of bedrails in clinical practice in Korea.
